PASC Club Gala 2010

At the moment a provisional date of Saturday 12th June 2010 has been set aside for our club gala subject to a final date being set for the Teletot 'Swim-Off. This event will bring together the majority of club swimmers of all age groups and end our swimming sessions for this season. Parents and swimmers are asked to keep this date free, confirmation of day and other arrangements will be given as soon as possible. In the meantime all of last year's trophy holders are asked to return all silverware ENGRAVED and POLISHED to the main desk BEFORE Wednesday 21st April!

PTL End of Season Challenge Gala

This event will take place in Ballymena on Saturday April 24th with the warm-up scheduled to begin at 5.30pm.

Congratulations to the following PASC swimmers who have qualified:

The date for the Teletot 'Swim-Off' gala is yet to be advised although it is most likely to be the first weekend in June.

Please note that there will be NO SWIMMING on either of the May Bank Holidays!

Teletots beat Newry & Mourne!

Congratulations to all members of the Teletot team who defeated Newry and Mourne at Cascades last night (Saturday 20th March). It was a great performance from all age groups against a normally strong Newry & Mourne team. Portadown got off to a flying start in the mixed medley relays and kept the lead throughout the individual strokes despite several fine swims from the Newry team. The gala finished with the scores Portadown 216 Newry & Mourne 184. A date for the next fixture against City of Belfast has yet to be confirmed. Thanks to all those who helped officiate poolside and of course those who provided the supper.

PTL Time Trial Gala Saturday 13th March

Congratulation to all 20 swimmers from PASC who took part in the Time Trial gala last night in Ballymena. Although places in the 'End of Season Gala' have yet to be decided there is no doubt that we will have several swimmers representing Ulster Blue Squad in the final against Ulster Red in April. Swimmers form several clubs were took part in the heats including; Lecale, Banbridge, Ballymena, Leander and Larne. All those who have qualified will be notified as soon as possible. A quick pit stop in Burger King in Antrim on the way home made it all worthwhile. Thanks to the usual travelling support from several mums and dads.

'Portadown Times' Swimming News

The Portadown Times has published photographs involving a number of our swimmers over the last two weeks. Although these have been in the pipeline for several weeks it is encouraging to see us given such prominent coverage. Photographs from the County Armagh Championships and our recent bursary award from Texaco have been included in this week's issue (5th February 2010). Copies of these are available from the local 'Times' office. Great to see so many swimmers in official club poolside kit.

Club Fees!

New FINA Swimsuit Rules!

FINA, the official governing body for swimming have issued new rules regarding swimwear in an attempt to remove what they call "unfair advantage". From the start of this year swimsuits for males should NOT extend below the knee or above the navel and swimsuits for females should NOT cover the shoulders, neck, extend below the knee or have any zips! These rules apply to all clubs and we must adhere to such a policy. Please ensure that all swimwear is suitable for future competitions.

Congratulations to Newry and Mourne

Newry and Mourne were overall winners of this year's Co Armagh Swimming Championships on Saturday. The club came with a large squad and were simply too strong for the other clubs to threaten. Lurgan finished second with Portadown third. Armagh returned to the event after missing a year due to closure of their home pool, the club are still in the process of re-establishing themselves in competition swimming and we wish them all the best in their efforts. A big thanks to hosts Lurgan for such an enjoyable day and to all officials, swimmers and volunteers who helped to ensure a problem free gala. Thanks also to our own team who did their best against stiff competition. There is no questioning the talent of our younger swimmers many of whom came away with a handful of medals. Hopefully event times will soon be available, let's see how many new P.B's were set.

Teletot Gala Saturday 6th February V Cookstown

Members of the 'Teletot' team will face Cookstown (away) on Saturday 6th February 2010 in the second fixture of the season. The team coach will leave from Cascades car park at 4.45 pm! As always, the team will be picked on merit and a full list of those selected will be available from the club desk on Wednesday 3rd February. Swimmers are reminded to contact Sonia if they are unavailable as soon as possible! If we know who cannot swim then other members of the squad can be contacted to take their place. This is especially important to allow relay teams to compete.

Wednesday at Cascades 7.30 - 8.00 pm small pool swimmers can now also swim at Brownlow on Thursday from 6.30 - 7.00 pm.

Silver squad members can also swim at Brownlow on Thursday from 6.00 - 7.00pm.

Please note that Yellow squad swimmers do not swim on Saturday morning!

Armagh Championships 2010

Lurgan ASC will host this year's event at the Waves leisure complex, warm-up swims will begin at 8.30am sharp! This is one of the highlights in the local swimming calendar with all teams anxious to 'do their best'. Once again it is expected to be a fight between 'the big two' ie Lurgan and Newry and Mourne for the Championship title but we hope to produce a determined performance and leave with some new PB's and perhaps a medal or two! Swimmers are asked to wear full club kit and ensure that they have plenty of suitable snacks and fluids. The cafe will be open for business throughout the competition. May we as a club wish all those taking part the best of luck and thank hosts Lurgan for all their hard work in preparation for the event. As a result of the Armagh Championships there is no 'Club' swimming this weekend, normal sessions resume on Monday at Cascades.

PTL win for bithday boy Chris!

Congratulations to all PTL swimmers who defeated Ballymoney 608 to 534 at Cascades on Saturday night and made it a special 'birthday win' for 'D' group swimmer Chris Grimley.This was our first home swim and it was a well deserved victory despite a number of fine individual efforts from Ballymoney. As always the Individual Medley Relays gave a good indication of the strengths of both teams with Portadown winning six of the eight events and taking an early points lead that was kept right to the end. On such a night when so many swimmers did so well it was difficult to pick out individuals but the 'B' Girls of Eden Magwood, Rachel Chapman, Lauren Robinson and Mia Gershovitz dominated their age group throughout the gala. Abbie McCullough was top for the 'A' Girls and Beth Irwin took all four strokes in the 'C' Girls event strongly supported by Susanna McQuade, Chloe Black and Derbalah Guy. Top boys included Daniel Chambers, Cathal Meredith, Andrew Irwin, Morgan Magwood, Dean Gershovitz and Kurt Black. Roisin Meredith was the star performer for the 'D' Girls. As always thanks to all who came to officiate, help, or just cheer. Our thanks also go to the coaches and swimmers of Ballymoney ASC for their assistance and efforts, we wish them well for the rest of the season.

PTL Squad to face Ballymoney ASC

The PTL team have their first 'home' gala of the season on Saturday 16th January 2010 against Ballymoney. Hopefully the recent thaw in the weather will mean that we can field a strong team with no one concerned about how they might get back home! Warm up is scheduled for 5.30pm with the gala due to start as close to six o'clock as possible. Any swimmer unable to attend should contact Dolores Meredith or leave a message with the staff at Cascades (38332802). In the past there have been occasions when no notice was given and it was too late to contact a replacement and a team sheet needs to be prepared listing the names of all swimmers for every stroke before the gala starts. As this is a home swim it is up to us to provide supper for the visiting team; boys are asked to provide biscuits/tray-bakes and girls sandwiches. Due to this fixture there is no swimming this weekend (Saturday morning & Sunday afternoon)

Teletots beaten at Lurgan

Congratulations to Lurgan Teletots who earned a well deserved home win on Friday 8th January 2010 against our own junior squad. Unfortunately, the difficult weather conditions meant that we were unable to travel with a full team but a big 'well done' to those who stepped in at the last minute. The fog certainly made the journey to and from Lurgan far from pleasant and with so many of our younger swimmers coming from outside Portadown no one can blame them for staying put. Hopefully we will be able to draw on a full squad of swimmers for our next gala. Thanks again to all who came to support the team, we hope you all returned home safe and sound.

£3,500 Cheque from Texaco!

Texaco (Ireland) have presented the club with a cheque for £3,500 as part of their bursary package available to a range of organisations throughout Ireland. Of those who applied only a handful were successful and the money will certainly be put to good use. Funding is always welcome and this sum from Texaco particularly so coming as it does at a time when money is so tight. Sonia Gershovitz accepted the cheque on behalf of the club at a presentation ceremony in Dublin. A plaque was also gifted to the club to mark the occasion and this is to be displayed in the foyer at Cascades. The Portadown Times will carry an article within the next week or two complete with photographs of the main presentation as well as a poolside picture featuring a group of our own swimmers. A big thanks to Texaco for their generosity and to our own Elizabeth Brannagh for her efforts on behalf of the club, it is much appreciated.

Its a quick return to action after Christmas with both PTL and Teletot teams in action. The Teletots begin with a visit to Lurgan on Friday January 8th and the PTL have a home swim on Saturday 16th. As mentioned earlier this year's Co Armagh Championship will be held on Saturday 23rd January 2010 hosted by Lurgan ASC. In addition to these events Swim Ulster Graded Galas will take place on the weekend 22-24 January (which clashes with the Armagh Championships) as well as 12th- 14th February (closing date for entry 29th January) and finally the series ends on the 16th-18th April ( closing date for entry 26th March). Cookstown win PTL Gala

Cookstown defeated the PTL squad by a 24 point margin in Saturday night's gala. Although the final score was close the home team led from start to finish despite some fine individual and relay team efforts to close the gap. Throughout the night Cookstown maintained a 10 point lead right up to the final Freestyle relays when they eased further ahead to finish 584 - 560 points after the 54 events. The team were disappointed to loose but with two 'home' swims still to come there is still the opportunity to finish the season on a winning note. Coaches noted one or two areas where we need to improve and where work must be done. However, providing swimmers do their best to attend the majority of sessions available then performances will get better. Congratulations to Cookstown and as usual a big thanks to those' volunteers' who helped run the event.

Time Trials at Brownlow

Those swimmers named on the list provided on Wednesday night are asked to be at Brownlow at 5.45pm on Thursday 10th December. The 'Time Trail' will run from 6.00 - 7.00 pm and the usual 'Gold' squad will train for one hour only, ie from 7.00 - 8.00pm. Those involved are Girls and Boys 2000 & below; Girls and Boys 1999; Girls and Boys 1998.

PTL Squad to face Cookstown

The third PTL fixture of the season takes place on Saturday 5th December in an away gala against Cookstown. The team will be looking forward to make it two in a row following last month's win in Belfast against Alliance. It is expected the Cookstown will provide tougher opposition. Swimmers are asked to meet at Cascades at 5.00pm on Saturday, the coach will leave promptly at 5.15. Due to this gala there will be no swimming this weekend. Normal sessions will resume next week.

PTL Squad defeat Alliance

Congratulations to all members of the PTL team who took part in the gala against Alliance on Saturday night and earned a well deserved win. The opening medley relay event is always a good indication of how strong both teams are and it was Portadown who came out on top taking six out of the 8 age group swims! Despite some fine individual swims from Alliance Portadown soon began to increase their points lead finishing ahead of their rivals in each of the individual stroke events. The final Freestyle relay event was again dominated by Portadown there were wins for the 'A' Girls and 'A' Boys; 'B' Girls, 'C' Girls and 'C' Boys. As always the relay events produced several tight finishes with Portadown coming from behind to win in both the 'B' and 'C' Girls races in the final few strokes while the 'D' Boys just lost out on the winning touch by a whisker. It was also a debut gala for several swimmers who were called in to replace established squad members who were unavailable, a big thanks to Chloe Walker and Emma Bramble for stepping up to the mark. Special mention must also go to all of those younger swimmers who had already taken part in the Arthur McDonald Gala in Newry earlier on in the day and to Ellie McArdle who was a very late replacement 'D' Girl swimmer. The final score was Alliance 538 - Portadown 606.

At the moment there are links to 'Swim Ulster' and the BBC Sport 'Swimming' page which has advice on stroke technique and simple animated frames which help to illustrate various teaching points. There are tips on each stroke as well as 'starts' and tumble turns'. Why not click on the link and have a look for yourself? Other useful sites will be added throughout the season. Club Fund Raising

Our latest fund raiser 'Soccer Squares' has just 'kicked off'' club members who still have not received their card should pick up one at the club desk on Wednesday night. Activities like these are vital and provide some much needed funds for the Club. 'Soccer Squares' works on a scratch card principle with the winner pocketing a 'Fiver' and the balance going to PASC. All monies should be returned to the desk by Wednesday 25th November 2009 when the final whistle on the fund raiser will be blown.

November Gala Weekend

It's a busy weekend for a lot of our swimmers. The PTL squad travel to Belfast to face Alliance at Avoniel Leisure Centre - warm-up 5.30pm - bus to leave Cascades at 4.30pm, while our junior swimmers travel to Newry for the annual Arthur McDonald Gala - warm-up 8.50 am! This event is a great opportunity for younger members of the club to take part in a real competition but where the emphasis is in 'doing your best'! Those attending and taking part are advised to bring something for lunch as well as drinks and of course a 'wee snack.' Newry and Mourne who host the event have asked that swimmers bring suitable poolside footwear eg flip-flops or similar. As a result of these galas regular swimming sessions for the weekend have been cancelled! All back to normal next week.

New Club Squad System Launched

Our new 'Squad System' continues to develop with swimmers now being placed in one of our six development groups; Gold, Silver, Blue, Green, Red and Yellow. The idea is to focus coaching on swimmers of approximately the same level of ability to improve their technique and performance. Promotion from one squad to another will not be dependent upon age, those who are identified as 'out performing' their squad will be moved to the next level. In order to make this possible each squad has been assigned a number of sessions where they can meet and train together. Details of these sessions are available on the club noticeboard. At the moment these changes affect large pool swimmers only, however, those who move out of the small pool will be placed in one of the squads listed above.

Club Success at Halloween Graded Gala 2

Several swimmers returned from the second in this year's 'Graded Gala' competition held in Larne 23rd/25th October 2009. Andrew Irwin, Daniel Chambers, Curt Black and Joel Milligan along with Beth Irwin, Chloe Black, Eden Magwood, Lauren Robinson and Abbie McCullough all finished with a clutch of gold and silver medals for their efforts. The next in the series ( Ulster Graded Gala 3) will take place at Castlereagh during the weekend 22nd/24th January 2010. Further details will be available soon.

Halloween Swims!

Arthur McDonald Novice Gala!

This popular gala will take place on Saturday 7th November 2009 and it does involve an early start. It is designed to cater for swimmers who have not as yet won at open galas or at a previous Arthur McDonald event. Sonia will be getting the squad sorted, those not available should let her know as soon as possible as entries will need to be confirmed by Friday 16th October. Check with the PASC desk on Wednesday night for further information. The Arthur McDonald gala is a great opportunity for younger swimmers to experience competition in a friendly 'fun' atmosphere. Strokes take place over 25 metres and entrants may swim in one or more events. A small charge is levied on a 'per stroke' basis.

Dungannon win by a whisker!

Dungannon finished 15 points ahead of our PTL squad in what proved to be a hard fought but extremely enjoyable opening gala on Saturday 26th September. This was the first chance for both clubs to see their teams in action after the summer break and on this occasion Dungannon, swimming at home had just the edge to claim a win. The opening Medley Relays finished 5-3 to Dungannon despite wins for our A and B Boys and B Girls teams. There was little to choose between the teams in the main strokes or in the Individual Medley events with first one club and then the other ahead. However, Dungannon made sure of the win in the Freestyle Relays once again taking 5 out of the 8 events. The gala finished with a final score Dungannon 573 Portadown 558. Of course the result was disappointing but several swimmers took the opportunity to put in excellent individual performances and we look forward to our next gala and hopefully a home win. Thanks to everyone who officiated and to Dungannon for their hospitality.

New Season New Challenges!

Firstly a big welcome back to all our swimmers, all of the usual sessions are now well and truly 'up and running'. Unfortunately, we have had to say goodbye to several senior club members who have moved on to higher education across the water, we wish them every success in their chosen careers. The new look D squads (boys and girls) are already in place and keen to make their mark at the top end of the PTL gala competition. Of course it will take a while for everyone to regain their competitive edge but those swimmers who are stepping up as well as those new to PTL have the ability to give any club in our division a battle for the points. It is our intention to introduce a new squad system as soon as possible which we hope will improve the overall quality of our swimming and set out a path for individual development.

Our first full club session of the new season will take place on Wednesday 2nd September, 2009 in Cascades at the usual times i.e Session 1 6.30-7.30 pm and 7.30-8.30 pm for the older groups. Obviously it will take a few weeks to get everyone back in shape (including the coaches!) but with the first PTL gala only a matter of weeks away there is no time to waste. Swimmers are asked to turn up at their usual session but may find themselves moved to a different lane. The club are currently working closely with representatives from Swim Ulster to develop our coaching techniques and organisation in order to improve our ability to compete at all levels. See you on Wednesday.

Summer Holidays!

Wednesday 17th June brings to an end our swimming for this season and no doubt everyone is looking forward to the summer holidays. A big 'thank-you' is due to all our swimmers who have worked so hard all year as well as to our coaches, committee members and of course the parents who have supported the club in any way. We must also say thanks to those senior swimmers who have decided to retire from competitive swimming or who have moved on to attend college or university, your efforts and above all loyalty to the club are much appreciated. Our first club night of the new season will be Wednesday 2nd September but keep your eyes posted on the website for news of the PTL squad sessions which normally start a couple of weeks earlier.

Prize Day - Revenge of the Swimmers!

Congratulations to all trophy winners who left with cups and medals following our annual presentation of prizes yesterday at Portadown Rugby Club. Portadown Times will be running an article next week featuring the latest club news and photographs. Yesterday was a big success, even the weather improved to allow the 'Chefs' to do their bit at the BBQ while various games took place on the pitch. Even though the rain held off it was still a wet afternoon for Delores, Conor, Bill and Jeffrey who found themselves in the stocks facing the dreaded 'Wet Sponge!' For swimmers it was the chance to get their own back on coaches and officials and boy did they go for it. Thanks to all who helped on the day, it was great to see so many swimmers and parents enjoying the fun. Keep an eye out for more photographs on new 'Club Gallery' section. Don't forget: no swimming on Monday due to area gala or Wednesday which is our AGM - 7.00pm in Portadown Fire Station.

Teletots Win Swim-Off Gala!

All the hard work put in by the Teletot squad over the last six weeks paid off last night (Friday) as the team confirmed their Division 2 status in some style by actually finishing ahead of Larne with Coleraine being relegated to Division 1. This was quite an achievement especially as Larne had already beaten the young squad earlier in the season. Portadown opened the gala by winning three of the four mixed medley relays, a dream start which settled any last minute nerves and set the mood for the rest of the team. All swimmers showed great determination to stay ahead in the individual strokes and despite a strong final surge by Larne, Portadown finished by winning two of the four freestyle relay events ending up with a grand total of 307 points, 9 points ahead of Larne on 298 with Coleraine some way behind. A big thanks once again to the travelling support who cheered from the gallery but the real stars were the young swimmers who not only looked superb in their club gear but swam their hearts out on the night. Congratulations to everyone! (Anyone for a KFC?)

Club Gala Take Two!

Congratulations to all who took part in the club's annual gala - on both nights! There was a good turnout from members despite the fact that May is traditionally the exam season and the European Championship Final was on the telly. (tissues to all Manchester United supporters but the best team won!) A special word of praise to all of the younger swimmers who competed in the big pool for the very first time - a brilliant effort from everyone - there are mums and dads who couldn't have done so well! The results will now be sorted and made ready for Prize Day. The photographs taken by the 'Times' photographer will appear in the paper mid June as part of a feature on the whole season so look out for it then.

'Cascades' celebrates its 40th Anniversary on Saturday 30th May 2009 with a host of events including: half price swims from 1.00-5.00pm as well as half-price Aerobics and Cardio Cycle. In addition the occasion will be marked with a BBQ, 'It's a Knockout' competition and childrens' entertainmment. Why not stop by and sample what's on offer?

Teletot 'Swim-Off' details

This will be on Friday 5th June (possibly in Ballymena) although final details are still to be confirmed. The two fastest swimmers in each stroke will represent the club, those selected will be notified on Wednesday 3rd June when we hope to be able to confirm transport arrangements and times. All other members of the Teletot squad are very welcome to travel on the coach to cheer, shout, scream and yell in support of our swimmers. This will be our third year in a row taking part in such an event and everyone involved with PASC wishes the team 'all the best' on Friday night.

Our annual Prize Day will take place at Portadown Rugby Club on Saturday 6th June from 2.00 - 5.oopm. After the formal presentation of trophies etc. there will be a number of activities including: 'Soak the Coach', face painting, penalty shoot-out and other games as well as one or two surprises before finishing off with a BBQ! Swimmers are reminded that the annual PASC Gala will take place in Cascades on Wednesday night. This event brings almost all of our swimmers together and there are a host of trophies, medals, etc up for grabs. In order to get through the full range of events all of those taking part are asked to be at the pool for 6.15pm. A photographer from The Portadown Times will be there to take some photos for a forthcoming feature in the paper. With this in mind, swimmers will need to wear poolside kit, polo shirts or club hoodies if photographed. Those taking part will also need to bring a spare towel, suitable drinks, and a wee snack. Good luck to everyone, this is also another chance to grab a new PB! Finally, PASC would like to wish all of our swimmers who are about to start their exams (A level, GCSE or school) our very best wishes.

Our AGM will take place on Wednesday 10th June at 7.oopm in Portadown Fire Station just next door to Cascades. Attendance is compulsory as registration for next season will take place after the meeting is over. No deposits or registration forms will be accepted before this time! Not only is this your opportunity to register swimmers for next year but anyone interested in assisting with the general running of the club is welcome to step forward. A big welcome back to everyone after the Easter break, swimming sessions are now back to the usual pattern. Good luck to those members of the PTL squad who have qualified for the 'End of Season Gala' to be held in Larne this Saturday. Warm-up is scheduled for 5 o'clock and we look forward to hearing of several good swims. The next Teletot 'Time Trial' will take place next Wednesday night and all swimmers are asked to be ready at poolside at 6 30 pm sharp! Remember that the Division 2 'Swim-Off' final is only a few weeks away and a big effort is needed from everyone. Finally, the Portadown Times will feature an article in this weekend's paper outlining the season so far - demand is sure to be great so make sure you get your copy.

Friday June 5th has just been confirmed as the date for the Teletot Division 2 'Swim-Off'. This will decide whether we stay in this division for next season or make a quick return to Division 3. PTL End of Season Challenge Gala Finalists

No fewer than 10 club swimmers have qualified for the 'End of Season Gala' to be held in Larne at the end of the month. Congratulations to Colum Tiffney, Daniel Chambers, Roisin Meredith, Lisa Partridge, Beth Irwin, Andrew Irwin, Conor Lamph, Eve Lavery, Chloe Black and Ciarnan Higgins. This means we will be represented in each event with several swimmers qualifying in two or even three strokes! Colum, Lisa, Andrew, Conor, Eve, Chloe and Ciarnan will swim Breaststroke; Daniel, Roisin, Beth, Backstroke; Roisin, Freestyle; Daniel and Beth in the Individual Medley;and finally Beth, Lisa and Daniel in Buterfly. Congratulations to all swimmers, obviously the 'little treat' on the way home was well deserved!

Swim Off D Day for Teletots!

So now we know our Teletot squad will swim against two other clubs in the end of season 'Swim Off' gala at a venue still to be decided. Last Friday they lost by a mere 6 points against Larne ASC in an event that went right to the wire with the winners only emerging from the final Freestyle Relay event. Of course the team were disappointed with the result but we always knew that life in Division 2 was going to be tough. The fact that so many of the squad achieved new Personal Bests is evidence of their effort and determination. It is more important than ever that team members and those on the fringe attend every available session between now and June so that we can go into this gala well prepared and determined to fight for our place in Division 2. The talent is there, the coaches are ready and with just a little luck we will pull it off.

Teletots off to Larne

The Teletot team are off to Larne on Friday night for their last Division 2 league fixture of the season. Larne are expected to provide tough competition but so far the squad have impressed with their attitude and effort. The narrow 10 point defeat to City of Belfast in the last gala could easily have gone in our favour had we been able to field our full strength team, still, it did provide the opportunity for others to do their bit and once again many swimmers produced new PB's. Saturday Night Swims

With both senior and junior swimmers in action last weekend was a busy one for the club. The Teletot team lost by only 10 points against City of Belfast in a gala that could so easily have gone either way. Unfortunately, we were without several 'regulars' but those who filled in did their best. The Teletot squad continue to improve and hopefully we will have our full team available for the next gala. Meanwhile, in Ballymena, a group of PTL swimmers made a big impact on the 'Time Trials' gala in a fixture involving clubs such as Leander, Lecale (Downpatrick) Alliance, Banbridge, Ballymena, Kilkeel and others. The final qualifers are to be confirmed but we expect to have several swimmers in the representative squad to be selected to swim in Larne on 24th April. The quick 'pitstop' at KFC was much appreciated despite the thunder, lightning winds and tropical downpour! Great effort from everyone - goggles on or goggles off!!!

Banbridge win Teletot gala

Banbridge were deserved winners of Saturday night's Teletot gala. Although there were several good performances from individual Portadown swimmers the end result was never in doubt. The Banbridge team swimming in their own home pool took the lead in the medley relay events and drew further ahead in the individual strokes. A big 'well done' to Joel Milligan who impressed everyone with a fine series of swims. Congratulation too to some of our very young swimmers who will improve as they get older and that little bit stronger. The team will face City of Belfast in the next gala on 7th March.

Our next Teletot Gala is against Banbridge (away) on Saturday 21st February. All of the squad are asked to meet at Banbridge pool at 5.45pm ready for a prompt start! Banbridge will provide stiff competition so we will have to give that extra 10% effort. Remember this is a smaller pool than Portadown so it is important to 'go like the hammers'right from the start. Congratulations to all who achieved new PB's against Coleraine and for those who just missed out there are plenty of opportunities to improve over the next couple of months. Our next gala is away to City of Belfast on Saturday 7th March closely followed by a trip to Larne on Friday 27th March. Good luck to everyone for Saturday. Remember! Teletots win at Cascades!

Congratulations to all members of the Teletot squad who swam so well against Coleraine last night and earned a well deserved victory. This was a much improved performance and the end result was never really in doubt. The team contained several changes from that which lost to Lurgan earlier this month and the whole squad responded to the call to give 100%. It was a welcome return to form for some of our established swimmers but those new to the squad made it look like they have been team members for a long time. The final score was Portadown 214 Coleraine 186. Thanks to all who helped make the gala such a success and to our visitors from Coleraine whose team were a credit to their club. Remember the team is selected on fastest times and there are several swimmers keen to take their place in the Teletot squad. A full results sheet will be available on Wednesday night.

It's back to action for the Teletot squad on Saturday when they take on Coleraine in a rearranged fixture. Changes have been made to the team since the first gala a couple of weeks ago against Lurgan. Warm-up is at 5.o'clock at Cascades and we hope to get things under way no later than 5.30pm. All swimmers are asked to be at the pool in full kit where possible in good time for the event. Remember Teletot galas are fairly fast and furious, they all take place over one length and usually produce some exciting swims. Best of luck to all who are taking part. Armagh Championship Gala

Despite the unavailability of several swimmers we ended up with a reasonable medal haul at the gala. Well done to Daniel Chambers and Caitlin Wylie who set new championship records. Daniel finished with 4 gold medals our best individual performance on the day. Other highlights came from Eden Magwood (1 gold 2 silver) Caitlin Wylie (1 gold, 1 silver & 2 bronze) Rachel Chapman 1 gold, Beth Irwin 3 silver 1 bronze, Roisin Meredith 2 bronze, Eve Lavery 1 bronze. There was more success for the boys with Colum Tiffney 3 bronze, Andrew Irwin 2 bronze, Connor Lamph 1 bronze, Neil Mc Conville 1 bronze, Ciaran Higgins 1 bronze and Lachlan Mackey 1 silver. The 11/12 girls won the medley relay and the senior boys came second in their final. Next year the event will be hosted by Lurgan ASC and let's hope that we will travel with a full squad of swimmers.

Armagh Championship Update

Despite travelling to Newry without a number of swimmers those who attended made sure that PASC was represented in the majority of finals. Unfortunately because of missing swimmers we were unable to compete in several relay events leaving Newry and Mourne and Lurgan to contest first and second places unopposed. However, on a positive note there were several outstanding swims from individuals, (several of whom who were competing in this event for the very first time) not just those who finished in the medal places but also from others who made the finals and came away with 'Personal Best' times, proof of their effort and commitment. A huge thanks from all of the coaches to the swimmers who made the trip and the parents who came to watch and support. A full list of medal winners, finalists, and PB's will be posted a.s.a.p. Thanks is also due to Newry and Mourne ASC for their work in organising the event - to be finished by 5.o'clock with so many events was quite an achievement!

Just another reminder that this years hosts will be Newry and Mourne. Warm-up for girls is set for 9 o' clock, yes, NINE in the morning and boys warm-up will follow! It is some time since we swam in Newry so if you don't know where the pool is please ask at the desk. A swimming club is a team and as such its success depends upon individual members acting together, an absent team member may mean that an entire relay squad cannot swim! All those taking part should be at the pool in good time and remember to pack something to eat/drink as catering facilities are very limited!!! Last year at Cascades we returned with a host of medals, the same determination and effort is needed from everyone this time round.

Computerised result system now in use

The clubs investment in new software for recording results now means that a full printout will be readily available for swimmers to keep an eye on their times. Hy-tec 'Meet Manager' once fully operational will help track progress and speed up gala administration. We hope that swimmers will look at their results and set themselves targets for improvement. Hot news! Caroline has confirmed all remaining dates for the Teletots which will take us through to the end of March. Lurgan too strong for Teletots

The Teletot team lost their first gala of the season against Lurgan but many of our young swimmers produced new 'Personal Best' times. This was always going to be a tough task, Lurgan came with a strong squad and deserved their win. For many of our swimmers this was their first experience of a competitive gala but everyone at the club was proud of the effort they gave. The team is selected purely on ability and all swimmers have an equal chance of joining the squad- the fastest three swimmers will be picked for each stroke! The team is not 'set in concrete' and will change! As usual a big thanks to all who officiated, cheered, taxied, swam or just came to support.

Our PTL squad were beaten by a very strong Ballymena team on Saturday 6th December. Unfortunately, we were unable to field a full strength team due to the absence of several club swimmers and the end result did not come as any great surprise. This popular gala for novice swimmers will be hosted by Newry and Mourne in Newry on Saturday 8th November 2008. Teletot coaches are already putting together a team from those swimmers from 1997 age group and younger. The gala is always great fun and it gives the wee and the not so wee ones a chance to take part in a real swimming competition against local opposition. The fact that only 18 points separated the teams after 55 events gives an idea of just how close things were. Our strongest event on the night turned out to be Backstroke where we came out ahead 89 points to 73 which on top of Medley Relay success put us in the driving seat for the rest of the night, however, Dungannon finished strongly by taking 5 out of the 8 Freestyle Relay events but this was not enough to alter the final result. Overall, it was a good performance but the Freestyle strokes will need to be better next time. Thanks to Dungannon who are currently without a home pool for playing their part in this opening gala of the new season. Final score: Portadown 582 Dungannon 564.

Assistant Teachers' Course at Cascades

A course designed to train new assistant teachers is now well under way. Those involved have already completed their first 'theory' session and can now look forward to some poolside experience (and the traditional wet feet!). The course should provide us with several new coaches and help to ease the pressure on our existing team. We wish them well over the next few weeks and hope to see them actively involved in coaching in the near future.

PTL Gala Portadown V Dungannon

The opening gala of the new season takes place on Saturday 13th September when we are at home to Dungannon. Squad members are asked to be poolside and ready for 'warm-up' at 5.00pm. This is an early start to the season for all clubs due to a very busy swimming programme which runs right till the end of June 2009! It is important that we get our own season off to a good start, training sessions have been well attended and let's hope we can grab a win on Saturday. Due to essential maintenance at Cascades there will be no Sunday session this weekend.

The first PASC 'Club Night' of the new season will be on Wednesday 3rd September at 6.30 pm for the younger swimmers and 7.30 pm for the rest of the squad. All swimmers are asked to return to the sessions and lanes they occupied at the end of May/June until they are informed of any changes. The PTL squad have already had several sessions due to the fact that our first PTL gala is scheduled for mid September against Dungannon. A big thanks to all who turned up over the last couple of weeks and for the 100% effort after the summer break - time to get the arms and legs moving! We would also like to say "welcome" to a number of new members, for some this will be their first experience of competitive swimming and we look forward to watching them improve. Prize Night Thursday 19th June

Just to remind everyone that Prize Night will be held in Portadown Golf Club on Thursday 19th June from 7 to 9 o'clock. This is a change in venue for us and we look forward to seeing all of our swimmers as well as parents, grandparents and friends. A photographer from the Portadown Times will be there so make sure that you bring at least one brush and that the hair is perfectly gelled for that special shot!

AGM support for PASC position

There was overwhelming support for the club's fight to urge the local council to rethink their decision to dramatically reduce the current level of financial support for organisations such as PASC. Members were asked to lobby council members on the club's behalf so that there can be no doubt regarding where we stand on this issue. The new committee is also now in place and will examine a range of options in order to secure the future of the club. Congratulations were expressed to the coaches and Teletot squad members who won the 'Swim-off' Gala in Cookstown. There is no doubt that this young team contains many talented swimmers. Outgoing Chairman Bill Partridge thanked all concerned with the club for the support they have given throughout his term in office and the club secretary outlined plans for training new coaches early next season. A big thank-you to all parents who attended, your continued support in much appreciated.

Teletot Squad Win Swim-Off Final!

PASC 'Teletot' squad produced their best swim of the entire season to defeat Ballymena and Dungannon in this years 'Swim-Off' finals held on Friday 6th June at Cookstown. The final scores were Portadown 340 pts, Ballymena 270 pts and Dungannon 229 pts. Although the winning margin was 70 points this was an extremely hard fought gala with each team giving 100%, indeed, in the early stages of the event the teams were separated by only a handful of points! The win was perhaps all the more special for our 'D' group swimmers who were taking part in their last Teletot gala; finishing with a gold medal was just reward for all their hard work over the last four plus years. Finally, a big thanks to all the travelling support who came to watch and those parents who once again helped out by acting as timekeepers. Thanks too to the other swimmers and officials from Ballymena and Dungannon for making it such an enjoyable and exciting final.

Club to fight Council decision!

Club officials, coaches and members were shocked and dismayed to learn of the proposed hike in pool hire fees by Craigavon Borough Council. The extent of the increase would, if confirmed, threaten the very existence of PASC and our colleagues in Lurgan. Such an action shows little appreciation for the work carried out by so many unpaid volunteers from all sections of the community over the last 30+ years and an insult to those who kept the club alive when faced with multiple pool closures over a two year period! Is this treatment a just reward for their efforts under extremely difficult circumstances? We deserve better! Furthermore, we as a club already make a substantial contribution to the local Council via pool hire fees and it is most unlikely that the loss of revenue from PASC would be offset by additional 'public' swimming. Finance however is only part of the issue; what about the young people themselves? We may not be the largest club but at least we know where our priorities lie and to that end we would urge the Council to rethink their decision. We would also ask our own membership to write, phone or email local Council representatives to lobby them on this matter. The very survival of the Club is at stake! Teletots celebrate narrow win against Dungannon.

For much of this gala there was little to separate these two teams and the final score of 193 to 207 in Portadown's favour was an indication of how close it was. Dungannon made the better start with particularly strong performances in the team relay events but several of our individual swimmers including some making their Teletot debuts gradually turned things around. Thanks to all who officiated or just came along to cheer us on. The fixture marks the end of our league programme for this season, details about the 'Swim-Off' finals will be given as soon as possible, in the meantime swimming sessions continue as usual. Check earlier post for changes to swimming schedule for May and June.

PASC Prize Night Thursday 19th June 2008

Prize Night this year will take place on Thursday 19th June, 7 - 9pm at Portadown Golf Club which is located a mile or so out of town on the Gilford road. The entrance is on the right hand side almost directly opposite Long Lane. This is a change of venue from our usual spot at the rugby club. We look forward to seeing all of our swimmers and their parents on the night as it is an important event in the club calendar. 'Sinbad' Water Theatre Workshop

As many of you may already know a water based performance of 'Sinbad' is taking place in Cascades early next month. The company responsible for the show are offering 20 of our swimmers the opportunity to take part in a 'workshop' after the 7pm performance on Wednesday 11th June. If you are interested in taking part please leave your name at the desk next week and the lucky swimmers (boys and girls) will be notified in due course. Please note that 9 is the minimum age for participation.
